Public spaces such as parks, nature trails, museums, etc. are for everyone's enjoyment. High-density residential neighborhoods would not be possible without them -- there isn't room for everyone to have a backyard. On the other hand, some residents have special needs or preferences, e.g. pets or children, that make a backyard greatly desirable. City planning in our high-density neighborhoods should favor public spaces, but not at the total exclusion of private ones. |
