My own neighborhood is, thankfully, not a food desert (East Price Hill). However, a lot of neighborhoods, especially low and mixed-income neighborhoods like my own, have a serious lack of fresh food options. It's easy in these neighborhoods to find a place to grab a bag of Cheetos and a pop. It's not so easy to find a place to purchase (or grow) fresh fruits and veggies. Once we end our food deserts, we need to focus on outreach and education about how to prepare these foods and why it's important for them to be a solid part of your daily diet.
